Sadly, the snowmobile riding season is drawing to a close for many of us.  If you are putting your machine away until next year, there are a few things you need to do to protect it and make sure it will be ready to go and in prime shape when the snow falls again.

NOTE: Always consult your owners' manual when making any repairs or doing maintenance!

The J & S Jacks Sled Lift (available in two models) is a great tool for performing these types of maintenance on your own, saving you from high dealer costs.  It allows access to all parts of your sled at the perfect working level.

1. Clean your snowmobile thouroughly.  Wash the exterior with soap and water, being sure to remove all dirt and grease.

2. Consult your owners manual.  Apply snowmobile grease to the suspension and steering points indicated in the manual.

3. Lubricate all suspension parts and pivot points with spray lubricant (like WD-40) to fight corrosion while reducing friction.

4. Use fogging oil  to coat internal engine parts.  This will protect these areas from rust and corrosion due to moisture during storage.
For two stroke models: Spray fogging oil into the airbox opening for 20-30 seconds with the engine warm and idling.  (This should be done outdoors, as it produces a lot of smoke.)

5. After you are done running the engine and fogging, remove the battery and charge it fully. The battery should be stored in a cool, dry place.  Check periodically and keep a full charge to minimize age-related capacity loss during storage.

6. Remove all remaining gasoline with a siphon pump.  Drain the fuel tank into an approved gasoline container.  Loosen the carb drain plug to drain each carb  (Place a piece of cardboard underneath to keep your garage floor clean).  Tighten each drain plug when finished.
Be sure to work in a well-ventilated area and keep flame away from this area.

7. Remove the V-belt and store it separately until next season. Next, apply silicone protectant and lubricant spray to the entire engine, track, and other metal, rubber and plastic parts to help protect and slow rust and salt corrosion and to prevent plastic and rubber parts from deteriorating and cracking.

8. Apply a coat of wax to all exterior painted surfaces.

9. Keep the track and skis off the floor to prevent damage to them and your garage floor by using either the Sled Lift or Sled Jack.
